Hi Elspeth,
I do know about WordPress a bit. I did setup this site myself with WordPress, but I used a pre-made WordPress theme and modified it a little for this site. WordPress is a great platform but I don't know if you could use it to make a photoblog with large images easily.
A few days ago I came across a free platform called http://www.pixelpost.org It looks similar to WordPress but it is designed for photoblogs. I'm considering trying to use it in the future somehow.
Hope that helps

Hi John, I\'ve been looking around the net trying to figure out how to get a photoblog going - one where I can feature fairly large images and also as much or as little text as I would like. Did you design your page yourself? Do you understand how to use the free wordpress platform to create what I am talking about? I\'m not very versed in things like CSS, etc. If you know the answers to my questions I\'d really appreciate it if you could email me at nowiswowisnow (at) yahoo (dot) com

Thanks.
